The causes of dental malocclusion mainly include congenital factors and acquired factors.

Congenital factors refer to genetic factors, while dental malocclusion caused by acquired factors can be avoided.

Dr.Clear Aligner reminds teenagers and their parents that bad habits have become an important cause of acquired malocclusion. These habits should be corrected promptly and combined with orthodontic treatment to achieve optimal results. Parents should help their children correct the following bad habits in a timely manner:

1.Tongue thrusting habit. Tongue thrusting blocks the growing teeth with the tongue. Over time, the upper and lower teeth cannot make contact during biting, resulting in a gap deformity between the upper and lower dental arches.

2.Lip biting habit. If the upper teeth bite the lower lip, it can cause protrusion of the upper front teeth and retrusion of the lower front teeth and mandible;if the upper lip is frequently bitten, it can lead to mandibular protrusion deformity, commonly known as "buck teeth" or "underbite".

3.Finger sucking habit. Most children are accustomed to sucking their fingers. When fingers are frequently inserted between the upper and lower dental arches, it can cause deformities such as protrusion of the upper front teeth, retrusion of the lower front teeth, and facial asymmetry.

4.Mouth breathing habit. Some children have nasal diseases that are not treated promptly, causing airway obstruction and years of mouth breathing. This can also lead to narrowed dental arches and misaligned teeth.

5.Object biting habit. Biting quilt corners, pillowcases, handkerchiefs, pen caps, etc., can prevent normal contact between the upper and lower teeth in the biting area, creating small gaps. This is medically known as open bite, which can directly lead to abnormalities in the middle and lower1/3 of the face, especially the shape of the mouth.
