Braces are effective in correcting misaligned or protruding teeth in teenagers. But for adults, how effective is this treatment method?

Theoretically, adults can also undergo orthodontic treatment with braces, but it comes with certain challenges. This is because adult bone development is complete, and tooth movement and recovery are not as fast as in minors. Since growth and development have ceased in adults, bone metabolism and alveolar bone remodeling are relatively slow, resulting in slower tooth movement and longer treatment duration compared to children. Corrective treatment of the jaw bones yields limited results. In many cases, surgical procedures are needed in conjunction with orthodontic treatment to address patient requirements.

Additionally, adults have a higher prevalence of dental caries, and many patients also suffer from periodontal disease. Missing teeth, residual crowns, and residual roots are also common. Combined with severe tooth wear and systemic health conditions, these factors make adult orthodontics more challenging than that of teenagers.

The optimal age for orthodontic treatment is during adolescence. Adults who have missed this window can still undergo treatment, provided their teeth are in good condition—free of caries and periodontal disease—and they are willing to cooperate fully and remain committed. Generally, adult orthodontic treatment takes1-2years or slightly longer, depending on individual dental conditions. Since adult alveolar bone is fully developed and teeth are essentially set, and teeth have a memory function, the risk of relapse is higher. Therefore, during the orthodontic process, patients must not only demonstrate strong perseverance but also actively cooperate with their doctor, attend regular check-ups, and have the force of the braces adjusted to ensure optimal treatment outcomes.
