According to current clinical research statistics, relapse after orthodontic treatment can be attributed to multiple factors. Dr.Clear Aligner has summarized the main causes as follows:
(1) Not Wearing Retainers as Instructed
The vast majority of relapse cases occur because patients fail to wear their retainers as instructed by their orthodontist. Generally speaking, after orthodontic treatment is completed, teeth are not yet stable in their new positions. Retainers typically need to be worn for one and a half to two years.
During the first year after braces are removed, retainers should be worn diligently both day and night, then switched to nighttime-only wear. If the retainer feels comfortable, wearing time can be gradually reduced until it is no longer needed.
Since each patient's dental condition is different, the way and duration of retainer wear may vary slightly. Your orthodontist will provide specific instructions. But no matter what, remember to wear it!
(2) Wisdom Tooth Eruption
Currently, many adults undergoing orthodontic treatment are actually receiving secondary treatment. This is often because after completing treatment during adolescence, wisdom teeth tend to erupt around adulthood due to jawbone size discrepancies. The force from wisdom teeth can easily cause teeth to twist, accelerating relapse of the previously corrected teeth. If not detected and treated promptly, a second round of treatment may be required.
(3) Poor Oral Habits
During the retainer-wearing period, poor oral habits must be eliminated. These include lip biting, tongue thrusting, and other habits that can potentially affect the bite. Additionally, poor oral habits are detrimental to oral hygiene, which can lead to a series of periodontal disease risks. If periodontal health is compromised and retainer wear is neglected, teeth may shift and begin to show signs of mild relapse.
